Strides Katherine Price Hughes House (Strides KPH) is an Independent Approved Premises commissioned by the Ministry of Justice. Approved Premises play a critical role in the effective risk management of men released from prison, providing enhanced supervision, monitoring and rehabilitation to support safe reintegration into the community.

This role requires experience of working with complex and vulnerable individuals and an understanding of residential settings within the Criminal Justice System.

About the role
We are recruiting for a full-time, permanent Residential Assistant to join the team at Strides Katherine Price Hughes House. You will support residents transitioning from custody to community living, helping to maintain a safe, structured and supportive environment while promoting positive behaviour change and public protection.

The post is paying
Pay Rate: £14.83ph PAYE / £19.69ph Umbrella
Contract: Full-time 36.5 hours per week, temporary contract for six weeks initially 
Location: Strides Katherine Price Hughes House, Highbury
Reporting to: Head of Criminal Justice

Overview of the Role
As a Residential Assistant, you will support the day-to-day running of an Approved Premises, ensuring residents comply with licence conditions and house rules while providing practical and emotional support. You will work closely with managers, probation officers and partner agencies to manage risk, respond to incidents, and support residents’ rehabilitation.

The role involves shift work and requires strong communication skills, resilience, professionalism and the ability to respond effectively to challenging situations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise residents in line with Approved Premises policies and procedures
  • Enforce house rules and respond appropriately to non-compliance or challenging behaviour
  • Contribute to resident risk management through observation, reporting and information sharing
  • Communicate key risk issues effectively during handovers and throughout shifts
  • Liaise with probation officers, out-of-hours managers and partner agencies including police, health and substance misuse services
  • Maintain accurate records, including incident reports and case notes
  • Support key workers through co-working and case support where required
  • Administer prescribed medication in line with procedures and complete medication audits
  • Carry out drug and alcohol testing in accordance with risk management plans
  • Monitor residents’ movements, CCTV systems, and conduct curfew, wellbeing and fire safety checks
  • Undertake room searches and clear rooms when required
  • Provide first aid and respond appropriately to incidents of self-harm
  • Support resident inductions and purposeful activities within the premises
  • Maintain health and safety standards and report maintenance or security issues
  • Answer the telephone and door and manage visitors and contractors in line with procedures
  • Represent Strides professionally and participate in supervision, appraisal, training and development

Essential Requirements

  • Experience working with diverse and vulnerable individuals, ideally within the Criminal Justice System
  • Experience working in a residential setting and with challenging behaviour
  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs (Grade C or above), including English and Maths, or equivalent experience
  • Ability to evidence strong literacy and numeracy skills
  • Willingness to work flexibly, including shifts
