This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong management experience, a background supporting domestic abuse survivors, and a thorough understanding of the challenges faced by Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities.
Essential Experience and Requirements

  • At least two years’ experience supporting BAME communities affected by forced marriage, honour-based violence and abuse.
  • At least three years’ experience working within a care, social welfare or similar support setting.
  • Fluency in English and at least one main BAME language.
  • Previous management experience, including supporting staff, providing supervision and overseeing complex casework.

  • A full, current driving licence, access to a vehicle and business insurance.
  • A clear Enhanced DBS check.

Candidates must also have experience providing advice and information, strong administrative skills, and the ability to manage complex workloads and make decisions independently.
Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operation of the refuge, ensuring a safe, supportive and culturally sensitive environment for residents.
  • Line-manage, supervise and support staff, including overseeing complex cases involving safeguarding, child protection and vulnerable adults.
  • Provide practical and emotional support to women and children affected by domestic abuse, forced marriage and honour-based violence.
  • Oversee residents’ support plans, helping them access benefits, housing, legal advice, healthcare, education, employment and other relevant services.
  • Support residents with move-on accommodation and resettlement, promoting independence and long-term stability.
  • Ensure residents receive culturally appropriate support, including language assistance, interpretation and help understanding their rights and responsibilities.
  • Maintain accurate case records, reports, monitoring information and administrative documentation.
  • Ensure contractual, funding, health and safety, security and safeguarding requirements are met.
  • Develop effective working relationships with local authorities, statutory services, voluntary organisations and other partner agencies.
  • Deliver or contribute to training and awareness sessions on domestic abuse and issues affecting BAME communities.
  • Participate in an out-of-hours management rota, including responding to emergencies and supporting the admission of new residents when required.

Skills and Knowledge
The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong leadership, organisational and administrative abilities.
  • The ability to work under pressure, prioritise competing demands and use their own initiative.
  • A thorough understanding of safeguarding, confidentiality, equality and diversity, and relevant domestic abuse legislation.
  • Knowledge of multi-agency partnership working across statutory and voluntary services.
  • An empathetic, approachable and non-judgemental manner.
  • A commitment to empowering BAME women and promoting anti-discriminatory practice.

Experience supporting people with complex needs, including mental health difficulties, substance misuse, female genital mutilation (FGM) and no recourse to public funds, would be advantageous.

This is an opportunity to take a leading role in a vital refuge service, supporting women and children to access safety, rebuild their lives and work towards independence.
